Week 2
Typographic Taxonomy - Brian Lucid
Concept Checklist
How I want my book to feel based on all the terms on Stream.
Using a thesaurus, I found synonyms of the words that I felt most strongly about on this list, such as young and classic.
My five words:
- timeless
- sincere (not quite humble)
- strong
- smooth (unhurried, unruffled)
- simple
Serif and Sans Pairing
I am using Caslon as my serif font but I don't know what sans serif font to pair with it.
Typewolf suggests P22 Underground
Typ.io suggests Brandon Grotesque
DesignBombs.com also recommends pairing Caslon with P22 Underground.
I am going to go ahead with P22 Underground but if I start designing and really don't like it, Brandon Grotesque will be my backup. Luckily they are both available on Adobe fonts.
19 Typefaces
A system of classification I am looking at currently is most influential typefaces of all time.
One article listed 11 of the typefaces on the list as being highly influential (Trajan, Blackletter, Baskerville, Didot, Bodoni, Franklin Gothic, Garamond, Futura, Times New Roman, Helvetica, Univers, Comic Sans).
This article listed 10 of the ones on our list (Helvetica, Baskerville, Times New Roman, Akzidenz Grotesk, Gotham, Gill Sans, Franklin Gothic, Sabon, Georgia, Garamond).
Another article's suggestions (Georgia, Gotham, Futura, Gill Sans, Garamond, Baskerville, Helvetica, Franklin Gothic, DIN, Akzidenz Grotesk, Sabon).
Combining these 3 articles together, the most influential typefaces from the list are:
Baskerville, Helvetica, Garamond, Franklin Gothic - on all 3 articles
Akzidenz Grotesk, Gill Sans, Sabon, Futura, Gotham, Georgia, Times New Roman - on 2 articles
DIN, Blackletter, Didot, Bodoni, Univers, Comic Sans, Trajan - on only 1 article
These typefaces combined equal 18, and I have decided to pick the last typeface as the one not included on the list that I think is also one of the most influential - albertus.
I then did some research on each of the typefaces to see who influenced who, and then tried to rank them in order of most to least influential based on this. This is the mind map I made; the arrows towards a typeface means it was influenced by the one the arrow came from.
