Week 5

Image
In Class We flowed the text into our text boxes, then went through using paragraph styles and edited it. Independent Study I also did a lot of micro detailing this week. This is the first page from my Helvetica spread and I'll go over all the edits I made. Putting captions in, and images. I put a proper running header with page numbers in the master page spread. This page has a running header that says 2 because it is number 2 on the list of most influential typefaces of all time (the sequence that my book is ordered by). I positively tracked my titles (100) seeing as they are all upper case. I added Helvetica into my pangrams, and optically made the fonts the same size. I put a thin space between the captions where I say the point size of the font, eg. 20pt has a space between the 20 and the pt now.  I made my capital E into the Helvetica Bold E, then analysed a couple of aspects of the typeface. I looked at my body copy and fixed all widows, as well as did my best to make the rag...

Interim Critique Things I need to change: - could add leading to captions - rule on body copy needs to be higher or lighter - paragraph spaces are different in body copy and captions - move text beneath title on typeface spreads - essay text into 4 columns, not 2 - section opener could be more engaging as the rest of my book is pretty formal and tight - glossary 1 1/2 columns Implementing Feedback This is me trying out different layouts of my typeface spreads as some of the feedback I received was that the body copy looked weird not being underneath the title. The next few images are of changes I made to try resolve this. I didn't end up being that happy with any of these options as some aspects work, but others feel crammed or isolated.  I don't think the flow is as good as on the original, so again, I've decided to leave it as it is. Trying out the glossary spread as spanning 1 1/2 columns. This was Timmy's suggestion and he also said that it would look good with the ...

Typefaces Baskerville, Helvetica, Garamond, Franklin Gothic, Akzidenz Grotesk, Gill Sans, Sabon, Futura, Gotham, Georgia, Times New Roman, DIN, Blackletter, Didot, Bodoni, Univers, Comic Sans, Trajan. In class Critique with Fay. She suggested merging my two directions to get the best out of both of them. Here I have the two spreads with all the edits Fay suggested, apart from page numbers. I was feeling like there was something off with the use of white space though. I wasn't sure about the large row left in the top half where nothing is happening. Here I made the tint of the title a little darker as I was finding that the title was getting a little lost at the top of the page. I also moved the pangram down again to trial that placement, as well as giving the image more space on the top and letting it have an extra row. I'm not sure about this though as it means it lines up with nothing. It also doesn't work having the pangram down a row as it looks best aligned with the ti...
