Week 4

Interim Critique

Things I need to change:

- could add leading to captions
- rule on body copy needs to be higher or lighter
- paragraph spaces are different in body copy and captions
- move text beneath title on typeface spreads
- essay text into 4 columns, not 2
- section opener could be more engaging as the rest of my book is pretty formal and tight
- glossary 1 1/2 columns

Implementing Feedback

This is me trying out different layouts of my typeface spreads as some of the feedback I received was that the body copy looked weird not being underneath the title. The next few images are of changes I made to try resolve this.

I didn't end up being that happy with any of these options as some aspects work, but others feel crammed or isolated.  I don't think the flow is as good as on the original, so again, I've decided to leave it as it is.

Trying out the glossary spread as spanning 1 1/2 columns. This was Timmy's suggestion and he also said that it would look good with the title aligned to the column before the glossary starts, but this doesn't fit with the rest of my spreads so I decided to keep it aligned.

Here I made the text span 4 columns instead of the 2 it used to reach across. I think this is easier to read and it definitely looks more like an essay, or a big chunk of text to be read.

When I did it for this essay, the layout meant I had to get rid of the Beatrice Warde image to have room for all the text, so it's looking a little empty.

A spread of one my layouts with all the changes, such as fixed paragraph styles, rule has been made lighter and moved up slightly, I put the subtitle in the same text box as the title.

Independent Study

From here, I need to have a go at preliminary pages, make an 80 page document with flowing text boxes, add in the first essay and put images and captions into each typeface spread.

Preliminary pages:

Existing book references

Brief analysis of the contents page of Frankie Magazine, issue 100.

An example of a contents page I discovered in one of my books.

Firstly I don't like the heading 'Table of Contents', I don't think it's necessary. Then they used bullet points at the front of each entry and the number at the end. Why? It doesn't look good. There are also some widows going on, and I think the line length isn't great either.

Page from 'Almost Adulting' by Arden Rose.

First essay:

I ended up using the vox image twice because I had an awkward amount of space leftover in the second spread of this essay.

Section openers:

This is what I've got at the moment, but I wouldn't be surprised if I change it in the future as I'm not super happy with it yet.

80 page document:

This is how my typeface spreads are looking, while I wait to get the instructions on how to easily flow text in, in class next week.
