Week 5

In Class

We flowed the text into our text boxes, then went through using paragraph styles and edited it.

Independent Study

I also did a lot of micro detailing this week. This is the first page from my Helvetica spread and I'll go over all the edits I made.

Putting captions in, and images.

I put a proper running header with page numbers in the master page spread.

This page has a running header that says 2 because it is number 2 on the list of most influential typefaces of all time (the sequence that my book is ordered by).

I positively tracked my titles (100) seeing as they are all upper case.

I added Helvetica into my pangrams, and optically made the fonts the same size.

I put a thin space between the captions where I say the point size of the font, eg. 20pt has a space between the 20 and the pt now.

I made my capital E into the Helvetica Bold E, then analysed a couple of aspects of the typeface.

I looked at my body copy and fixed all widows, as well as did my best to make the rag less shapey.

I went through all the copy and made the dashes the right length, you can see some em dashes in this spread in particular.

I also tried moving the baseline of the numbers down, as well as a point size but didn't think this worked that well with the specific typeface I'm using (Adobe Caslon) so just left them as they were.

I also put a thin space between numbers within brackets.

I made a new paragraph style for these little subheaders on two of the typefaces.
The image for Georgia really bothers me as it is the odd one out to the rest of the book because it doesn't have a border, and isn't a graphic typographic specimen. I did try finding a better image but haven't had any luck with that yet.

This is my index at the moment. I haven't had any feedback on this yet as it is a new spread. The rags on the right hand page are so terrible but I don't think there's actually a lot I can do about that. I did have all the headings in red but that was a little much, so this approach is just to have the first heading from each letter in red.

I also tried spacing the entries out more, but to be honest it looked a bit gappy. I like the tighter index I have above. It also meant that not all the entries fit on two pages, and I just had a weird little orphan on one whole spread by itself.

Printing

I printed this out in black and white, ready for class but have already noticed a few things that need changing.

The big Es on each spread change position, because of the different typeface used. I need to go through and move these, as well as optically change the point size, because some of them are bigger than others.

Also, some of my images are very low quality - Garamond comes to mind first. I need to replace it as it just doesn't look good.

I still need to do a few edits, and need Timmy's help on how to remove a running header from blank pages, as well as stop the page numbering from including the preliminary pages.
