Week 9

Cover sprint

Quick mock-ups

The cover I liked the most after this class. Going to change the colour back to the bright red I had at the beginning because I didn't like the darker red printed. Also change the font family to show off the large family that Acumin has.

This is almost the cover but the full title is going to be smaller and in the same typeface.

Still need to change the spine width.
Soft cover with perfect binding. Uncoated or coated paper, probably around 120-150gsm, maybe more. Usually I would go for uncoated but I actually like the feel of the SRA3 paper we printed our mockup on, and I think that was coated. It was quite smooth, and not glossy like a magazine.

Perfect binding because of the price. In an ideal world, I'd like to learn Japanese stitch binding and do it myself. Soft cover because the inside of the book is reasonably traditional, and I don't want the book to get stuck in this category and I think a hard cover would make it feel too classic.

My main inspiration is the Frankie magazine. Soft cover, perfect binding, uncoated 120-150gsm.

Specimen Research

From Pinterest.

This 6 page accordion fold is the design I have taken the most inspiration from.

I love the single colour of this booklet which gives it a riso/zine/low-fi quality.

Specimen Brainstorming

Wrap around specimen.

Horizontal fold out.

Comparing how long the poster would be to an a3 poster.

Different ways to fold this piece of paper. A poster could work for my specimen because my typeface is a display font, as well as made for text sizes. I'm thinking though I will only bother with a poster if the content I choose really works for this format, otherwise it doesn't contribute much.

Thinking about the folds, and what words will be made out of the letters that spell Acumin.

Deciding between the black and white versions...

Content:

- display vs text sizing

- comparisons to Helvetica and Univers

- discussion of how it fits into the mid-century modernist zeitgeist

- show of the 90 families that make up the typeface

- specifications (date, creator, country etc.)

This is five sections of content which could go onto one page each.
